Castro finishes in the Top 10, as GU places fifth at Goucher Classic

TOWSON, Md. - The Gallaudet University women's cross country team finished fifth overall out of six teams at the Goucher College Classic on Saturday as the Bison earned 127 points.
Junior Kayla Castro (Tucson, Ariz.) had a Top 10 finish as she completed the 6,000-meter course in 26 minutes and 52 seconds. Castro was just over a minute behind York (Pa.) College runner Melody Parshall who won the race in 25:40.
Freshman Amy Bachtel (Columbus, Ohio) was the next Bison to finish as she placed 30th overall (31:11). Junior Kirsten Swanson (Grapevine, Texas) followed in 34th place (33:30). The final two GU runners to earn team points were Kayla Hardaway (35:39) and Olivia Malcolm (36:28), who finished 38th and 39th overall, respectively. This was Hardaway's debut for the Buff and Blue. Freshman Lucita Alford (Chicago, Ill.) finished 42nd overall (37:01) as the Bison had a season-high six runners compete in the meet.
York won the team competition with 37 points as the Spartans had four runners finish in the Top 10. Coppin State University (Division I) finished second with 59 points as the Eagles edged out the host Gophers by one point as Goucher earned 60 points. St. Mary's (Md.) College, another Capital Athletic Conference team in addition to York, was fourth with 74 points. Prince Georges Community College was last with 161 points.
Gallaudet will run in its final regular-season meet next Saturday, October 17, in the Hood College Invitational. The 10 a.m. meet will be in Frederick, Md. The Bison then will have several weeks to prepare for the Capital Athletic Conference championship being hosted on November 7.
