Castro leads women's cross country in season opener
SALISBURY, Md. - Junior Kayla Castro led the way for the Gallaudet University women's cross country team on Saturday morning in the season opener for the Bison. Castro finished the 5,920-meter course at Winter Place Park in Salisbury, Md., with a time of 25 minutes and 22 seconds to place 34th overall.
Gallaudet runners Amy Bachtel (32:38) and Kirsten Swanson (36:01) finished the course 84th and 87th overall, respectively. The race was the first collegiate competition Bachtel who is a freshman.
Messiah College won the Sea Gull Opener with 29 team points followed by Rowan University (46 points) and Shenandoah University (95 points). A team needs five runners to earn team points. Rowan runner Jen Rawls won the race in 21 minutes and 47 seconds.
The Bison will next run in the Wilmington Invitational in Wilmington, Del., next Saturday the 12th at 10 a.m.
