Gulvas, Shepps earn April Bison of the Month honors

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet University Athletics Department announced the two recipients for Bison of the Month recently for April. The honorees are softball freshman Kara Gulvas (Crown Point, Ind.) and baseball sophomore Jeremy Shepps (Mechanicsburg, Pa.).

Gulvas led the Bison softball team during the month of April with a .385 batting average as she had 15 hits, 10 runs and six RBI in 16 games. She led the team with a .487 slugging percentage and also had two doubles, one triple and was tied for the lead in walks with five. Her best game during the month of April came on during the final home game of the year. Gulvas went 3-for-3 at the plate, hit a double and a triple, racked up three RBI and scored twice in a 16-8 win over Rosemont on April 11. She had three hits in a game in three different games during the month of April. She was also solid in the field after she made five errors in the first four games of the month she settled down and only committed three over the course of the next 12 games. Gallaudet finished the year with a 3-23 record as all three wins came during the month of April and at home. Gulvas finished the year leading the team in five offensive categories including batting average (.356), on base percentage (.433), hits (21), doubles (three) and stolen bases (five). This is the second time Gulvas has earned the Bison of the Month award this season as she was honored in September for her play as goalie for the Gallaudet women's soccer team.

Shepps was recently named to the Capital Athletic Conference baseball second team for his performance this season. Shepps led the Bison in 11 offensive categories this season including; batting average (.317), slugging percentage (.500), runs scored (20), hits (38), runs batted in (18), doubles (13), triples (three), home runs (one), total bases (60), sacrifice flies (three) and stolen bases (11). When he wasn’t playing shortstop Shepps took to the mound and served as one of the top pitchers for Coach Curtis Pride. Shepps posted a 2-10 record where he led the team in innings pitched (71.1), strikeouts (55), appearances (13), complete games (six) and runners picked off (six). Shepps pitched a complete game against Stevenson University at home on April 1 as the Bison won 5-3 to earn the program’s first conference victory in 13 years. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate where he scored two runs and hit a double, triple and drove in one run in the historic win. The victory grabbed the attention of the Washington Post and the USA Today as the Bison garnered media attention by print and television groups. The team was even invited to the White House as special guests of President Obama to witness the ceremony for the New York Yankees on April 26. For the month of April, Shepps led the Bison with a .382 batting average, seven doubles, 13 runs and RBI, 35 total bases and a .636 slugging percentage. On the mound he went 2-4 and had a 6.75 earned run average as he struck out 32 batters in 40 innings pitched.
