WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Gallaudet University Athletics Department recently announced the two recipients of the Bison of the Month for December. The basketball programs swept the honors as senior Easter Faafiti (Pittsburg, Calif.) was selected as the women’s honoree while junior Layton Seeber (Champaign, Ill.) took home the men’s honor.
Faafiti’s outstanding play propelled the Buff and Blue to a 9-0 (6-0 NEAC) record through the end of December. One of those nine wins was a 67-51 take-down of defending NEAC champion Penn St.-Berks in which the 5-10 Faafiti amassed a hearty 16 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and five steals while going a perfect 4-for-4 at the free-throw line. While impressive, it was one of three double-doubles she had during the month of December, headlined by a 28-point, 15-rebound, seven-steal performance Faafiti turned in against NEAC foe Wilson College on the first day of the month. Leading the stampeding Bison over their first nine opponents, Faafiti and her teammates are quickly garnering national attention, receiving a number of votes in both Division III polls. Faafiti earned the NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week award for the week of December 20.
Seeber helped the men’s basketball team excel in the month of December, where they won four of five games, highlighted by a 91-84 win over Wells College in their NEAC debut to bring their record to a league leading 7-3, 4-1 NEAC. The 6-5 forward was a critical cog in that victory with 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four blocks – a stat line exemplifying his wide-ranging capabilities. Through the entire month, Seeber averaged a healthy 19.8 points per game, including a career-high 25-point effort against Penn St.-Berks on December 19. Accompanied by eight rebounds and 10 assists, that performance helped Seeber earn the NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week award for the week of December 20.
The January Bison Athletes of the Month will be announced in February.
