WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Gallaudet University Athletics Department recently announced the two recipients of the Bison of the Month for January and both are repeat winners. Men's swimming junior Brian Bennett (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and women's basketball senior Easter Faafiti (Pittsburg, Calif.) were selected, marking the second time each has been honored this season.
Though the team dropped both of its January meets, Bennett won all five of his events: the 1,000 yard freestyle, 500 freestyle, and 200 freestyle against Marymount (Va.) University on January 30 and the 500 freestyle – by a whopping 46 seconds – and 200 freestyle against Hood College on January 22. For his excellence, Bennet was selected as the men’s swimming and diving NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of January 24.
“[Brian] is the hardest worker on the team, has the best attitude on the team, and his enthusiasm is infectious; he leads by example. [Bennet] is everybody’s friend, because he is so fun to be around,” said Gallaudet swim coach Bill Snape.
However, Snape was quick to point out that Bennet still has work to do. “It’s just like March Madness, a team that goes 32-0 but loses in the first round has not had a successful year. [Brian] has had a great season but he wants to set some career best times. I think he [will] do it. He will surprise us all,” said Snape.
Faafiti powered the nationally ranked women’s basketball team to victories in all nine of their January contests, averaging an astonishing 23 points and 14.8 rebounds per game. In fact, she led the team in both points and rebounds six times this month, including a monster 30-point, 24-rebound effort against Morrisville State College on January 30. Faafiti amassed numerous individual honors throughout January, as she was named women’s basketball NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week twice, honored as ECAC Division III South Region Player of the Week twice, and appointed to the D3hoops.com National Team of the Week for January 10-16. The Bison began the month unranked, but thanks in part to Faafiti’s outstanding play, they finished the month tied for 20 in the USA Today/ESPN Division III coaches' Top 25 poll published on January 25.
“Easter is very deserving of the [Bison of the Month] award. She has been a tremendous leader this season and represents Gallaudet University Athletics in a great way,” said Gallaudet women’s basketball coach Kevin Cook.
The February Bison Athletes of the Month will be announced in early March.
