WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University Athletics Department has announced the two recipients for the Bison of the Month award presented by Gallaudet Interpreting Services (Somerset, N.J.) for March. Baseball sophomore pitcher Danny O’Donnell (Olney, Md.) and softball shortstop Chelsea Lee (South Brunswick, N.J.) were selected for their exceptional performances as Bison student-athletes.
Lee played in all 15 games for the Bison in March. She accumulated a .360 batting average, 11 RBI, 18 hits, four doubles, three triples, two home runs, two stolen bases, and scored 16 runs. Lee was named North Eastern Atlantic Conference (NEAC) Softball Player of the Week two consecutive times for the weeks of March 24 and 31. Lee continues to be one of the top hitters in the conference statistically, as she is first in home runs (three), triples (four), total bases (50) and is second in runs batted in (20).
O’Donnell pitched in nine of the 18 games for the Bison, as he posted an 3-0 record with three complete games. In 27 innings pitched, O’Donnell allowed only 27 hits, one run, 10 walks, while piling up 28 strikeouts. O’Donnell was named the NEAC Pitcher of the week twice for the weeks of March 24 and March 31. O’Donnell has been one of the top pitchers statistically in the conference, as he is second in wins (four) and strikeouts (43), third in shutouts (one), fourth in runners caught stealing percentage (.600), and fifth in strikeouts per game (7.84).
These are the eighth Bison of the Month awards for the 2013-14 athletics seasons. Each month the Gallaudet University Athletics Department will recognize two standout student-athletes (one male, one female) from their respective sports. Previous winners include men's basketball freshman forward Joshua McGriff (Somerset, N.J.) and women's swimming junior Anna Polivanchuk (Orebro, Sweden) for the month of February; men’s basketball senior forward Orion Palmer (Riverside, Calif.) and women’s basketball senior guard Stephanie Weiss (Wellington, Fla.) for the month of January. Senior men’s swimmer DJ Everton-Lovell(Norfolk, Va.) and women’s basketball senior forward Lindsay Stergio (Montville, Conn.) for the month of December. Football sophomore running back BJ Flores (Raymondville, Texas) and junior swimmer Alexandra Polivanchuk (Orebro, Sweden) for the month of November. Football junior defensive lineman Tyler Snider (Thornville, Ohio) and soccer senior defender Katie Giles (Gaithersburg, Md.) for the month of October. Football senior defensive back Nicholas Elstad (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and women’s volleyball senior outside hitter Lane Peters (Phoenix, Ariz.) were the September Bison of the Month.
