Gallaudet athletics will be well represented at 2013 Summer Deaflympics in Bulgaria

WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University will be well represented at the 2013 Deaflympics in Sofia, Bulgaria, next week when the 22nd Summer Deaflympics kick-off and run from July 25-Aug 4. Current and former Gallaudet Bison student-athletes will suit up for their home countries. The USA Deaflympic teams have 15 players that suited up for the Bison last season out of the contingent of 126 athletes and 25 coaches. There are three Bison head coaches that are coaching for Team USA in Bulgaria.

Lynn Ray Boren, GU women’s volleyball head coach, is the head coach for the USA deaf women’s volleyball team for a second Deaflympics in a row. He helped to guide Team USA to a silver medal in the 2009 Summer Deaflympics in Taipei. Bison assistant coach Ray Lehmann joins Boren on his Team USA coaching staff and current Gallaudet strength and conditioning assistant Katelyn Reese is a member of the team.

Gallaudet men’s basketball head coach Brendan Stern is an assistant coach for the USA deaf men’s basketball team while GU women’s basketball head coach Stephanie Stevens is helping out the USA deaf women’s basketball team during its preparations for the 2013 Deaflympics.

GU softball head coach Joseph Kolcun is serving as an assistant coach for the USA deaf team handball team and Gallaudet women’s soccer assistant coach Liza Offreda will suit up as a player for Team USA’s deaf women’s soccer team in Bulgaria.

The Gallaudet University athletics department would like to wish the best of luck to all current and former Bison student-athletes competing in the 2013 Deaflympics, no matter what country they represent.
