Donald Padden, '45, to serve as honorary captain at 2015 Homecoming game

WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University Athletics Hall of Famer and living legend Donald Padden ’45 will return to Kendall Green for the 81st anniversary of Homecoming, being held Oct. 23-25.

Padden is the last living member of Gallaudet’s famous “Five Iron Men” basketball team that won the 1943 Mason-Dixon Basketball Championship. Padden was a faculty member for 42 years at GU before he retired in 1987. He also helped run the intramurals program for 10 years while on staff at Gallaudet. Padden was also the treasurer of the athletic fund, later renamed the Charles R. Ely, G-1892/Donald A. Padden, 1945, Athletic Endowment Fund. The fund supports the athletic programs at Gallaudet. He also served as Gallaudet University Alumni Association (GUAA) treasurer from 1982 to 1989 (two terms). Donald and his wife Agnes, ’47, were responsible for the mileposts in the GUAA alumni newsletter for 28 years.

Padden is the only member of the Class of 1945 that will be in attendance. He will serve as a honorary captain for the Gallaudet football team as the Bison host Husson University on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 1 p.m. He will also flip the coin at the start of the game.

Four of the Bison’s six fall varsity teams will be in action on Homecoming weekend. The women’s volleyball team will begin things on Friday, Oct. 23, with a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game against SUNY Poly at 8 p.m. in the Field House. A pep rally from 5-6:20 p.m. will also be held in the Field House on Friday night.

On Saturday, the women’s volleyball team will play two more NEAC games against Morrisville St. at 10 a.m. and SUNY Cobleskill at noon. The men’s soccer team will host SUNY Cobleskill on Hoy Field at 11 a.m. while the women’s soccer team plays in the same location at 1 p.m. The annual Homecoming Class Parade will begin at 12:15 p.m. on Thomas O. Berg Track at Hotchkiss Field before the football game begins at 1.

The weekend wraps up on Sunday with a soccer doubleheader against SUNY Poly at Hotchkiss Field. The men’s team will play at Noon followed by the women’s team at 2 p.m. This will be Senior Day for the soccer teams.
