Smith and Nelson earn December Bison of the Month honors presented by GIS

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University Athletics Department has announced the December Bison of the Month recipients presented by Gallaudet Interpreting Services (GIS). Freshman guard Jakkisha Smith (Dallas, Texas) of the women's basketball team and senior guard and co-captain of the men's basketball team Raymond Nelson (Riverside, Calif.) were selected for their outstanding performances during the month of December.

The women's basketball team went 1-4 overall and 1-2 in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play. The Bison defeated Penn St.-Berks, 90-69, on Saturday, Dec. 3, to pick-up their second win of the season. Smith came off the bench averaging 19.7 points in the first three games of the month before she earned a starting spot on the floor. In her first game as a starter on Friday, Dec. 9, she registered a double-double for the Bison scoring 16 points and collecting 14 rebounds. In total, Smith netted 93 points, 31 rebounds and 18 steals in December.

"With such a young group of student-athletes, we knew that Jakkisha had the potential to become a dominant and reliable player our team needed," said Gallaudet women's basketball coach Stephanie Stevens. "We are proud of Jakkisha and her motivation to push herself and her teammates this semester. When we return from the break, we are looking forward to improving defensive and offensive fundamentals that will allow us to dominate an entire 40-minutes every game."

The men's basketball team went 4-1 in the month of December. Nelson started in all five games where he averaged 18.6 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. Throughout the month of December, Nelson shot 57.9 percent from the field as he netted 93 points, hauled in 49 rebounds, dished out 27 assists and picked up 11 steals. He led the Bison to victory with a strong performance against defending NEAC champions Lancaster Bible College on Dec. 2 when he scored 20 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals.

"Raymond has worked hard trying to get better on defense and rebounding because he knows that if we don't, than the game becomes harder," said Gallaudet men's basketball coach Kevin Kovacs. "We are excited to see him get better one game at a time and we know it will pay off for him and the team later in the season."

These are the fourth Bison of the Month awards for the 2016-17 athletic seasons. Each month Gallaudet University Athletics Department will recognize two standout student-athletes (one male, one female) from their respective sports.
