WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University Athletics Department has announced the October Bison of the Month recipients presented by Gallaudet Interpreting Services (GIS). Junior setter and co-captain of the women's volleyball team Jasmine Jeter (Noblesville, Ind.) and senior defensive back Carneilus Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) of the football team were selected for their exceptional performances throughout the month of October.
The women's volleyball team competed in 16 matches in the month of October where it posted an 11-5 overall record and won eight of their nine conference games. Jeter racked up 524 assists, 80 digs, 47 service aces and 16 blocks over 51 sets. She averaged 10.2 assists per set and currently leads the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) in services aces (87).
"I'm fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Jasmine this season. Jasmine has come a long way to reach the type of athlete she is right now," said Gallaudet women's volleyball assistant coach Cory Behm. "Learning a brand new position, specifically the setter position, and by being a team player, she was able to improve in becoming an integral part of the team. I am pleased to see that her work and effort throughout the season have paid off."
GU's football team took the field five times in the month of October winning one of their five Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) games. Smith started all five games for the Bison, was second on the team in tackles with 29 and second on the team in kick return yards with 106. On Saturday, Oct. 8, Smith intercepted a pass at the Gallaudet 2-yard line and returned it 98 yards for a Bison touchdown against Husson University.
"Carneilus is one of the best players that I have ever coached. It's an honor to have him on our team and I don't think there is anyone else on the team more deserving of this award than him," said Gallaudet football coach Chuck Goldstein. "As a senior on a team made up mostly of underclassman he leads by example and sets the bar high both on and off the field."
These are the second Bison of the Month awards for the 2016-17 athletic seasons. Each month Gallaudet University Athletics Department will recognize two standout student-athletes (one male, one female) from their respective sports.
