WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University Athletics Department has announced the January Bison of the Month recipients presented by Gallaudet Interpreting Services (GIS). Freshman guard Emelia Beldon (Frederick, Md.) of the women’s basketball team and senior Jonathan Tikhonoff (Folsom, Calif.) of the men’s swimming and diving team were selected for their exceptional performances for the month of January.
Beldon tallied 84 points, 42 assists, 30 rebounds and 13 steals in six starts where she logged 253 minutes. She passed out a career-best nine assists in a win to Cazenovia on Jan. 19, and followed that up on Jan. 27 with a career-high 18 points and five assists in a pull to victory over College of St. Elizabeth. In a show of consistency, Beldon contributed 15 points and six assists in a win on the road to Penn St.-Abington on Jan. 30. Beldon averaged 78 percent from the field, 12 points, and six assists per game.
"Emelia is doing such a tremendous job leading our team on and off the court," said Gallaudet women's basketball coach Stephanie Stevens. "Emelia’s level of intensity is increasing in all aspects of the game. Her dedication to this program is extremely impressive for an up-and-coming point guard. It is exciting to watch a freshman develop and run our offense in the way Emelia has this second half of our season."
Tikhonoff was selected as the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Men’s Swimmer of the Week for the first time this season on January 16. His winning time in the 200-yard butterfly of 2:13.50 was a new personal record for the 2017 NEAC Men’s Swimmer of the Year. Tikhonoff complemented this award with eight more wins in the month. He placed first in the 50- and 100-yard backstroke with times of 28.73 and 1:00.63, respectively, on January 20 against Stevenson University and finished first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:18.34). He secured a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay (2:01.62) with his teammates on senior day.
"Jonathan continues to impress everyone with his talent and work ethic. He swims every practice sharply focused on improving his stroke and swimming fast. He is a fierce competitor," said Gallaudet men's and women's swimming coach Larry Curran.
