WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University Athletics Department has announced the September Bison of the Month recipients presented by Gallaudet Interpreting Services (GIS). Freshman forward Danielle Wheeler (San Jose, Calif.) of the women’s soccer team and senior forward Sean Huber (Orange, Calif.) of the men’s soccer team were selected for their exceptional performances during the month of September.
The women’s soccer team posted a 5-3 record to begin the season. In the opening match against Trinity Washington University, Wheeler contributed a total of six points with three goals and 11 shots in an 8-0 win. Wheeler averaged 2.62 points and 1.25 goals per game in eight starts in September. In total Wheeler had 57 shots, 31 shots on goal, tallied 21 points, scored ten goals and one assist for the month.
“Danielle is a tremendous athlete and the month of September has been special for her. She scored three hat-tricks this month. She started her Bison soccer career with a bang,” said Gallaudet women’s soccer coach Liza Offreda. “She works hard every second she is on the field, even in the warm-ups, all of our training sessions, she puts in 110 percent effort, and this has paid off. She was a force up front leaving defenders in her wake as she scored goals after goals. She deserves all the recognition and success. I am proud of all of her accomplishments this month”.
Huber totaled eight points, four goals and had eight shots on goal as GU won two games in September. On Sept. 23, Huber helped the men’s soccer team bring home the first win against Bryn Athyn College with three goals, six points and the game-winning score.
"Sean has come to his own this year. He's one of the players that has surpassed expectations thus far and hopefully he continues," said Gallaudet men's soccer coach Pedro Braz.
These are the first Bison of the Month awards for the 2017-18 athletic season. Each month Gallaudet University Athletics Department will recognize two standout student-athletes (one male, one female) from their respective sports.
