WASHINGTON - For the second summer in a row, a group of Gallaudet University student-athletes and coaches participated in a Beyond Sports Tour. This summer a quintet from GU traveled to Italy to play basketball and take in some tourist activities.

Gallaudet women's basketball head coach Stephanie Stevens along with rising senior Sabina Shysh (Tucson, Ariz.), graduate Kelsey Hudson (Blissfield, Mich.), men's basketball rising senior Jamal Garner (Jacksonville, Ill.) and women's volleyball assistant coach Danielle Morris, who was also a basketball standout for the Bison, crossed the Atlantic Ocean to participate in this 2018 summer tour.

"The trip to Italy with Beyond Sports was an incredible experience as I had an opportunity to play the sport that I love the most. Not only was I able to play basketball, but I was able to travel around Italy and witness the country’s exquisite natural beauty," said Shysh. "I am so thankful that I was able to represent Gallaudet University as a student-athlete in the Beyond Sports Tour. I could not replace the experience for anything else. Again, I cannot thank Beyond Sports enough for making this trip a memorable one and giving me unique international experience."

Stevens, Shysh and Hudson participated in the first session (June 10-19) while Garner and Morris arrived for the second session (June 20-29). The 10-day trip gave the group an opportunity to tour Rome, Vatican City, Florence and the Tuscany region while playing basketball against teams from Italy.

"The Beyond Sports tour was a fantastic and rich experience for me. Going to Italy was my first time out of the country and being able to play basketball internationally," said Garner. "I met a lot of people from different universities all over the U.S. and got to know some native Italian people as well. My favorite part of the tour was I got to learn a lot about Italy’s history and culture. This trip was an amazing experience and I’m very fortunate to have had this opportunity."
