INDIANAPOLIS - Gallaudet University Associate Athletic Director for Communications Sam Atkinson has been reappointed chair of the NCAA Division III men's basketball committee for the 2019-20 season.
Atkinson was re-elected by his peers on the committee at the NCAA headquarters in June during the annual committee meeting.
He will guide and lead the committee, who helps to administer and conduct all aspects of the Division III men's basketball championship, into a joint championship with Division I and II in Atlanta during the 2020 NCAA Men's Final Four. It will be the second time that the men's three championships will be held in the same city, the other occurrence was also in Atlanta (2013). The 2020 Division III championship will be held Sunday, April 5, at State Farm Arena.
"This is a tremendous honor to be reappointed, by my peers, to the chair position. I am fortunate to work with seven other bright and adept committee members. I learned so much last year, serving in this role, and I am humbled to have this responsibility heading into the 2019-20 season," said Atkinson. "This coming year is an exciting time for NCAA men's basketball, with the joint championship, and an outstanding chance to showcase Division III men's basketball on the greatest stage during the 2020 NCAA Men's Final Four weekend."
Atkinson begins his fourth and final year on the NCAA Division III men's basketball committee. He has been the East Region chair for the past three years in addition to his national committee responsibilities. He served as the NCAA sectional representative at Swarthmore College in 2018 and has worked and supervised the last three national championships (two in Salem, Va., and last year in Fort Wayne, Ind.).
He becomes the first two-year chair of the NCAA Division III men's basketball committee in recent memory.
Atkinson is the third Sports Information Director (SID) to chair a NCAA sport committee as he follows Wentworth Institute of Technology's Bill Gorman (Men's Golf - 2016-18) and Shenandoah's Scott Musa (Women's Lacrosse - 2012).
The committee voted second-year committee member Mike Shauer, head coach at Wheaton College, as the vice chair.
Atkinson is in his 11th year at Gallaudet University, the world's only university with programs and services specifically designed to accommodate deaf and hard of hearing students, where he manages the sports information office and the media and public relations for Bison athletics.
Atkinson is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Board of Directors and is currently the First Vice President of the 3,000+ member national organization comprised of the sports public relations, media relations and communications/information professionals throughout all levels of collegiate athletics in the United States and Canada.
