AUBURNDALE, Fla. – It was a tough doubleheader sweep for Gallaudet University to stomach on Monday against Daniel Webster College at Lake Myrtle Sports Park Field #3 as the Bison lost 4-1 and 9-8. The two baseball teams are among the hundreds participating in the 2011 RussMatt Central Florida Invitational this spring. The Bison (7-7) are off to a rough start to their Spring Break trip as they have dropped three straight.
In the first game, the Eagles (3-1) scored three runs aided by two Bison errors in the top of the fifth inning to go up 3-0 on Gallaudet. Both teams scored a run in the seventh inning but the Bison comeback was cut short as they fell 4-1. Junior pitcher Ryan Hastings (Cherry Valley, Mass.) took the tough luck loss as he pitched the entire game.
The Bison held an 8-5 lead in the second game heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. The Eagles staged a comeback by scoring two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to win the game. Gallaudet's offense was led by junior William Chapman (Los Angeles, Calif.) who went 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in four RBI and sophomore Tommy Barksdale (Brookeville, Md.) went 1-for-5 and had two RBI in the loss.
GU will take Tuesday off before they go up against Vassar College (3-0) on Wednesday, March 16, at 3:30 p.m. at the Chain of Lakes Park Field #5 in Winter Haven, Fla.
