WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet University baseball team hung tough against non-conference foe Muhlenberg College on Sunday afternoon at Hoy Field as the Mules escaped with two wins, 4-1 and 4-3. The Bison led 3-0 in the second game of the doubleheader before the Mules rallied to score two runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Chris Guinn (McLoud, Okla.) knocked in the first run for the Bison in the second game with a RBI single that scored sophomore shortstop Tommy Barksdale (Brookeville, Md.) in the second inning. Starting pitcher William Chapman (Los Angeles, Calif.) delivered a two-run double in the third inning to plate Jordan Walters (Anaheim, Calif.) and Yuri Johnston (Greensboro, N.C.) to give Gallaudet the 3-0 lead.
Muhlenberg (2-0) came back on the Bison in the fourth when it took advantage of two Bison fielding errors. A throwing error allowed two Mules to score and cut the Bison lead to one, 3-2. The Mules took the lead for good in the fifth when they manufactured two additional runs.
Gallaudet had a chance to win the game as it placed runners on second and third base with two outs but senior Zane Noschese (Pittsburgh, Pa.) grounded out to pitcher Tim Velys, who sealed the game with his first save of the season.
Chapman (0-2) went the distance in the second game as he allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits, walked one and struck out three in seven innings of work. Sean Stipa (1-0) earned the win for the Mules as he pitched two scoreless innings.
In the first game, Muhlenberg jumped out to an early 4-0 lead as it pushed across two runs in the first and second innings. Gallaudet starting pitcher Ryan Hastings (Cherry Valley, Mass.) settled down and didn't allow another runs by the Mules the rest of the way. Hastings (0-2) only allowed four hits, four runs (two earned), walked four and struck out three. The Bison scored its only run in the bottom of the seventh inning and were poised to score more before the inning ended.
GU will next host Valley Forge Christian on Friday, March 4, in a non-conference doubleheader that starts at 1 p.m. The game was originally scheduled as an away contest but will now be here at Hoy Field.
