WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Gallaudet University baseball team continues to close the gap against its non-conference opponents during the Spring Break trip in Florida but unfortunately the Bison came up short against Vassar College on Wednesday in an 8-6 loss at the Chain of Lakes Park Field #5. The two-run loss to Vassar is a great improvement compared to last year's 11-3 setback to the Brewers.
The Bison (7-8) jumped out early on Vassar as they plated two runs in the top of the first and three runs in the second. The Brewers (4-0) chipped away at the Bison lead as they pushed across three runs in the bottom half of the second and then took the lead for good in the fifth as Vassar erupted for four runs.
Sophomore shortstop Tommy Barksdale (Brookeville, Md.) led the way for the Bison as he went 4-for-4 at the plate, walked once, hit a RBI double and scored two runs. Outfielder Yuri Johnston (Greensboro, N.C.) collected two hits, one RBI and one run in the loss. Freshman outfielder William Bissell (Brewer, Maine) was patient at the plate and earned three walks and had one hit.
Sophomore pitcher Layton Seeber (Champaign, Ill.) started the game but only got into the second inning before he was pulled in favor of freshman Chris Guinn (McLoud, Okla.), who pitched the next three innings where he allowed four runs, walked one and struck out two as he received the loss. The Bison have lost four straight in Florida.
GU will close out its Spring Break trip with a Thursday morning 10 a.m. game with Sewanee-The University of the South at the Chain of Lakes Park Field #4 in Winter Haven, Fla.
