Gallaudet places two on All-South region teams

MINNEAPOLIS – Gallaudet University placed a school record two players on the 2013 All-South region teams announced by the national website that covers NCAA Division III baseball. Senior Tommy Barksdale (Brookeville, Md.) and sophomore pitcher Brandon Holsworth (Beal City, Mich.) were named to the second and third teams, respectively.  The pair was named all-conference first team honorees by the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) earlier this month.

Barksdale was named NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week once (March 4). He ranks fourth in the nation for triples (seven) and 15th for triples per game (0.18) as the Bison rank 12th as a team for triples (19). Barksdale is also third in Division III for walks (34) and seventh for walks per game (0.85), 28th in on base percentage (.509) and 39th in slugging percentage (.654). The senior shortstop leads the NEAC in triples, walks, total bases (87), on base percentage, is second in runs (39), third in RBIs (40), slugging percentage, fourth in doubles (10), assists (102), fifth in hits (51), sixth in home runs (four), plate appearances (171), stolen bases (16), eighth in batting average (.383) and ninth in games (41). Barksdale has started all 41 games for the Bison. He had 14 games with two or more hits and drove in two or more runs in a game on 10 different occasions.

Holsworth, the NEAC Pitcher of the Year, is the most decorated pitcher in the conference as he was named conference pitcher of the week on three different occasions (March 4, March 25, April 29) this past season. Twice he was named an honorable mention for the NCAA Division III National Pitcher of the Week award (March 7, May 2) and he earned ECAC Division III South Pitcher of the Week honors once (April 30). Holsworth is ranked No. 23 in Division III for complete games (six). The sophomore leads the NEAC in games started (11), complete games, shutouts (two), innings pitched (78.1), second in strikeouts (52), third in wins (five), fifth in appearances (15) and sixth in ERA (3.22). Holsworth finished the regular season with three straight complete game victories.

The two Bison players were the only NEAC players on the All-South region teams while three NEAC players made the All-Mid-Atlantic region teams (two from Penn St.-Abington, one from Lancaster Bible).

William Bissell (Brewer, Maine) earned All-South region first team honors last season for the Bison.

This is the second year has compiled all-region teams. Players were nominated and by sports information directors (SIDs) at the various schools. Over 700 players were nominated for the eight different regions (Central, Mid-Atlantic, Mideast, Midwest, New England, New York, South, West). The ballots were made available to SIDs and the staff and contributors to vote for a predetermined number of players in their respective region.

Note: National rankings are through May 12, NEAC rankings are final
