Gallaudet swept on Opening Day at home

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University baseball team lost both games to Muhlenberg College on a cold, rainy Saturday afternoon at Hoy Field. The Bison (0-2) were out scored by Muhlenberg (2-0) in both games as GU dropped the first game 8-4 in seven innings and the second contest 4-3 in five innings.

In game one, Muhlenberg had three big innings, as the Mules scored three runs in the first and fourth innings, and two runs in the fifth. The Bison were able to score two runs in both the third and fourth innings as they recorded seven hits.

Muhlenberg starting pitcher Rob Shannon struck out five Bison, allowed two runs and walked three batters in three innings. Pitcher Phillip Balseca (1-0) pitched the last four innings for the Mules to pick-up the win as he struck out five and allowed two runs on four hits and one walk.

Junior catcher Casey Hicks (Henderson, Nev.) recorded three hits for the Bison in the loss.  He had a single to right field to lead-off the bottom of the second inning, and tallied an RBI in the third on a single to left field. Hicks' last hit of the game was leading off the fifth with another single, this time up the middle.

Junior pitcher Marcus Smith (Baltimore, Md.) started the game for Gallaudet. Smith (0-1) gave up three runs in the first but settled down and didn't allow a runner past second base again until the fourth inning where he allowed three runs. Smith allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits, walked four and had one strikeout.

Muhlenberg first basemen Nick Kennedy went 3-for-5 at the plate, with two RBI, a double and a run scored.

In the second game, the Bison scored two runs early but were not able to hold onto the lead after the Mules scored all four of their runs in the second. GU tried to start a rally in the fifth and final inning but were only able to tack on one run as the game was called for darkness.

Muhlenberg starting pitcher Matthew Lawsky (1-0) went all five innings where he allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits, walked two and recorded seven strikeouts.

Junior designated hitter JJ Klein (Cincinnati, Ohio) started Gallaudet off on the right foot with a single to left field. Klein scored on a Tommy Barksdale (Brookeville, Md.) triple to right field.  Barksdale ended the game 2-for-2, with an RBI, run scored and a walk. Sophomore first baseman Austin McKenzie (Sulphur, Okla.) scored the third run for Gallaudet on a Mitchell Bensman (Russia, Ohio) single to right field.

Freshman pitcher Ryan Rippy (Tullahoma, Tenn.) started the second game for the Bison and was pulled after 4.2 innings pitched. Rippy (0-1), gave up four earned runs on eight hits, two walks and a strikeout. Senior Jeremy Adams (Glenn Dale, Md.) came in to pick-up the final out for the Bison in the fifth inning. Brett Rosen led the Mules at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a RBI, one walk, one run scored, a triple and a double.

Gallaudet will hit the road to take on Wesley College on Sunday, Feb. 24, for a doubleheader at noon in Dover, Del.
