ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – For the second year in a row the Gallaudet University baseball team won 20 games in a season and did so in dramatic fashion on Sunday with a split against St. Mary's (Md.) College. The Bison lost the first game 7-6 but came back to win 4-3 in eight innings in the final regular-season game.
Gallaudet (20-19) trailed 3-1 in the second game before the buff and blue scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to push the game to extra frames. Junior catcher Casey Hicks (Henderson, Nev.) doubled home freshman Chase Magsig (Hudsonville, Mich.). Hicks came around to tie the game on a RBI-single by sophomore Mitchell Bensman (Russia, Ohio), who finished 3-for-4.
In the top of the eighth inning, senior shortstop Tommy Barksdale (Brookeville, Md.) tripled with one out and promptly scored on a single by Hicks (2-for-3, two RBIs, one run).
Sophomore Marcus Smith (Baltimore, Md.) earned the win as he pitched the final three innings out of the bullpen where he allowed just three hits.
St. Mary's (14-24) jumped out early on Gallaudet in the first game as the Seahawks scored three runs in the first and four runs in the third as they led 7-1. GU scored a run in the fifth and sixth innings before pushing across three runs in the top of the seventh.
Gallaudet now turns its attention to the 2013 North Eastern Athletic Conference tournament where the Bison are the No. 1 seed. GU will face fourth-seed Penn St.-Berks on Friday, May 3, at 9 a.m. at Hoy Field.
