Casey Hicks becomes first Bison to be named All-American

MINNEAPOLIS – Gallaudet University senior catcher Casey Hicks (Henderson, Nev.) made school history as he became the first Bison to earn All-American honors as he landed on the 2014 second team. The national website that covers NCAA Division III baseball has selected All-American teams since 2007.

This is Hicks' second award in a week as he was named to the All-South region first team on Sunday. The right-handed catcher was picked to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-South region second team this week as well but did not make the ABCA All-American team.

Hicks, the 2014 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Baseball Player of the Year, had a career season where he batted .401, 57 hits, 62 RBI, 38 runs, eight home runs, six doubles, six triples, 27 walks and 16 stolen bases in 42 games started. He earned the school's first National College Baseball Writers Association Division III National Hitter of the Week award on April 10 after being a two-time honorable mention honoree earlier in the season (March 6, March 13). He was a three-time NEAC Player of the Week this season (March 3, March 10, April 7) and a Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Upstate Player of the Week on April 8. He hit for the cycle in his first four at-bats back on March 1 and was a double shy of a second cycle a week later. In 13 different games Hicks had two or more RBI and in 13 consecutive games he had at least one RBI. He also hit five home runs in a seven-game stretch. He is second in NCAA Division III for RBI (62) and RBI per game (1.48), he is also in the Top 25 in the nation for triples (6), on base percentage (.519), home runs (8) and slugging percentage (.697). He led the NEAC in RBI, walks and second in triples, home runs, stolen bases, on base percentage, total chances (265) and slugging percentage (.697). Hicks was previously selected to the 2013 All-NEAC second team and 2012 All-NEAC first team.

Hicks is one of two NEAC players who made one of the 2014 All-American teams as Lancaster Bible outfielder Matt Taliercio made the third team.
