MINNEAPOLIS – Gallaudet University placed a school record three players on the 2014 D3baseball.com All-South region teams announced by the national website that covers NCAA Division III baseball. Senior catcher Casey Hicks (Henderson, Nev.), senior outfielder William Bissell (Brewer, Maine) and junior pitcher Brandon Holsworth (Beal City, Mich.) were named to the first, second and third teams, respectively. The trio was named all-conference first team honorees by the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) earlier this month.
Hicks makes his first appearance on a D3baseball.com All-Region team with his selection to the first team. The 2014 NEAC Baseball Player of the Year had a career season where he batted .401, 57 hits, 62 RBI, 38 runs, eight home runs, six doubles, six triples, 27 walks and 16 stolen bases in 42 games started. He earned the school's first National College Baseball Writers Association Division III National Hitter of the Week award on April 10 after being a two-time honorable mention honoree earlier in the season (March 6, March 13). He was a three-time NEAC Player of the Week this season (March 3, March 10, April 7) and a Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Upstate Player of the Week on April 8. He hit for the cycle in his first four at-bats back on March 1 and was a double shy of a second cycle a week later. In 13 different games Hicks had two or more RBI and in 13 consecutive games he had at least one RBI. He also hit five home runs in a seven-game stretch. He is second in NCAA Division III for RBI (62) and RBI per game (1.48), he is also in the Top 25 in the nation for triples (6), on base percentage (.519), home runs (8) and slugging percentage (.697). He led the NEAC in RBI, walks and second in triples, home runs, stolen bases, on base percentage, total chances (265) and slugging percentage (.697). Hicks was previously selected to the 2013 All-NEAC second team and 2012 All-NEAC first team.
Bissell earns his second D3baseball.com All-South region honor with his selection to this year's second team after being named to the first team in 2012. Bissell is a three-time All-NEAC first team honoree (2011, '12, '14) and a two-time NEAC Player of the Year (2011, '12). He is ranked in the Top 10 in Division III for triples (7) and 16th for triples per game (0.18). Bissell led the NEAC in triples and was third in walks (25), RBI (41) and fourth in hits (59), total bases (85), runs (45), on base percentage (.481) and plate appearances (187). The senior outfielder ranks fifth in the conference in fielding percentage (.989), only had one error all season, and was fifth in batting average (.386) and home runs (3). He had two or more hits in 19 different games, had two or more RBI in 11 different games and pieced together a 13-game hitting streak during the season.
Holsworth makes his second straight appearance on the D3baseball.com All-South region team as a third team selection. The two-time NEAC Pitcher of the Year (2013, '14) has been an all-conference first team pitcher the past two seasons. This year, he was a two-time ECAC Division III Upstate Pitcher of the Week (April 8, April 15) and earned the NEAC Pitcher of the Week award four times (March 3, March 10, April 7, April 14). The right-hander is tied for first in Division III for games started (15), 13th for strikeouts (85) and 22nd for victories (8). He leads the NEAC in games started, wins, innings pitched (103.1) and strikeouts. Pitched back-to-back shutout wins over national powers Shenandoah University (March 2) and Christopher Newport University (March 9) this year.
The three Bison players were the only NEAC players on the All-South region teams while Lancaster Bible's Matt Taliercio made the All-Mid-Atlantic first team and Keuka's Jon Borchert was picked to the All-New York second team.
Gallaudet's three D3baseball.com All-Region honors this season double the program's total to six. Last year, the Bison had two honorees in Tommy Barksdale (Second Team) and Holsworth (Third Team).
This is the third year D3baseball.com has compiled all-region teams. Players were nominated and by sports information directors (SIDs) at the various schools. Over 770 players were nominated for the eight different regions (Central, Mid-Atlantic, Mideast, Midwest, New England, New York, South, West). The ballots were made available to SIDs and the D3baseball.com staff and contributors to vote for a predetermined number of players in their respective region.
Note: National rankings are through May 18, NEAC rankings are final
