GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced its student-athlete of the week awards for March 3 and Gallaudet University senior Casey Hicks (Henderson, Nev.) was chosen as the NEAC Baseball Student-Athlete of the Week and junior Brandon Holsworth (Beal City, Mich.) was selected as the NEAC Baseball Pitching Student-Athlete of the Week.
Hicks became only the third player in Division III this year to hit for the cycle (single, double, triple and home run) as he accomplished the feat last Saturday in a 25-1 victory against Valley Forge Christian College. Hicks completed the cycle in his first four at-bats in three innings; he was pulled from the game in the third. He started the cycle with an inside the park grand slam in the bottom of the first inning. He scored four times and recorded eight RBI during the cycle. He has at least one hit in the first seven games of the season and has scored at least one run in six of the first seven games. He is batting .435 with 10 hits, nine runs, two doubles, two triples, one home run and 15 RBI, four walks and two stolen bases in 23 at-bats.
Holsworth, the reigning NEAC Pitcher of the Year, threw one of his best games in his career on Sunday as Gallaudet went on the road to upset South Region power Shenandoah University with a 6-0 shutout in a nine-inning game. The right-hander pitched seven scoreless innings as he allowed eight singles and walked two batters and struck out five. He is now 2-1 this season with 13 strikeouts in 16 innings. He won the season opener for the Bison back on Feb. 19 as he pitched five innings in a 14-4 victory where he recorded seven strikeouts.
This marks the first NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week honors for the Bison this season.
