GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced its student-athlete of the week awards for March 10 and Gallaudet University swept the honors for a second straight week. Senior catcher Casey Hicks (Henderson, Nev.) was chosen as the NEAC Baseball Player of the Week and junior Brandon Holsworth (Beal City, Mich.) was selected as the NEAC Baseball Co-Pitcher of the Week. Holsworth shares the pitcher of the week honor with SUNYIT's Joseph Redmond.
Holsworth had a career day last Sunday as he pitched a complete game shutout on the road against in-region powerhouse Christopher Newport University as Gallaudet won its seven straight game with a 1-0 victory. Holsworth matched his career best with nine strikeouts as he improved his record to 3-1 this season. He surrendered only four singles and walked two Captains in the nine-inning game. He logged 114 pitches in the pitchers duel with CNU.
Hicks came a double shy of earning his second cycle (single, double, triple, home run) in a week. Hicks went 3-for-3 in a 21-2 win over Baptist Bible (Pa.) College as he had a three-run triple, three-run inside-the-park home run, a single, sacrifice fly and a walk in five plate appearances. He scored two runs and knocked in seven before being lifted in the fifth inning. For the week, he went 5-for-8, two runs, one triple, one home run, eight RBI, three walks as he batted .625. He has hit safely in the 10 games he has played this season.
With these honors, the Bison now have four NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week honors for this season.
