WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Gallaudet University baseball team suffered its worst loss in six seasons Tuesday as Calvin College defeated the Bison by 18 runs, 19-1, at Chain of Lakes Park as part of the RussMatt Invitational. This is the most runs a Gallaudet team has lost by since April 14, 2010, when Penn St.-Altoona beat the Bison 28-2.
Gallaudet (0-8) allowed Calvin (3-4) to score at least one run in the first six innings, which includes a seven-run second inning that broke the game wide open as Calvin led 8-0. GU got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of third when freshman Kyle Gumm (Dallas, Texas) reached due to an error by the Calvin third baseman, which allowed Gumm to scamper to third base. Junior Ben Coleman (St. Paris, Ohio) knocked in Gumm, on the next at-bat, with a ground out to second base.
Junior outfielder Chase Magsig (Hudsonville, Mich.) led the Bison with two hits and sophomore first baseman Justin Strong (Charlotte, N.C.) had GU's lone extra-base hit as he recorded a double in the fourth. Junior starting pitcher Albert Blake (Derby, Conn.) got touched up for 16 of the 19 runs as he logged six innings and allowed 17 hits, walked six and had one strikeout in the loss.
The Bison will go up against national power Rowan University (4-4) on Wednesday, March 18, in Auburndale, Fla., at 10:30 a.m. Rowan was ranked No. 23 over a week ago but dropped out of the Top 25 this week with four losses.
