WASHINGTON - For six innings on Sunday afternoon the Gallaudet University baseball team was hanging with No. 14 Frostburg State University as the Bison only trailed 2-0 at Hoy Field. The final three innings were a different story as the Bison committed four errors and two wild pitches as the Bobcats scored five times to take the game, 7-2.
Frostburg St. (16-2) stole five of its eight bases during the final three innings as the Bobcats scored twice in the seventh and eighth innings and once in the ninth. First baseman Ricky Brady (2-for-3, two runs) clubbed a solo home run down the right field line in the eighth.
Gallaudet (1-11) got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the eighth when senior Mitchell Bensman (Russia, Ohio) doubled down the left field line to plate junior Chase Magsig (Hudsonville, Mich.), who scored from first base. Sophomore first baseman Justin Strong (Charlotte, N.C.) continued his hot hitting at the plate with a single up the middle to place Bison runners on the corners. Sophomore Zack Crawford (Newnan, Ga.) reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Bensman to score GU's second run as the Bison trailed 6-2.
Strong has increased his batting average to .409 and has hit safely in 10 of the 12 games played and is 11-for-16 in the last four games.
GU starting pitcher Dylan Hayes (Endicott, N.Y.) took the loss as he went six innings and allowed two runs on five hits and six walks. Frostburg starter Garrett Wiles (1-0) pitched six scoreless innings where he allowed three hits, three walks and struck out four for the nationally ranked Bobcats. FSU scored one run in the first and second innings as it led 2-0 early on.
The Bison will next make the short trip over to Catholic University of America (9-2-1) on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
