WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Penn College swept Gallaudet University, 13-0 and 3-1, on Saturday afternoon here in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) baseball doubleheader at Bowman Field.
Gallaudet (5-21, 3-5 NEAC) freshman Dylan Hayes (Endicott, N.Y.) singled to start the first game but after that Penn College (9-12, 3-3 NEAC) starting pitcher Ryan Hostrander didn't allow a hit during his eight innings logged as he walked two and struck out nine Bison. GU collected two hits in the ninth as junior Chase Magsig (Hudsonville, Mich.) and sophomore Justin Strong (Charlotte, N.C.) singled off reliever Zach Junk.
The Wildcats scored a run in the second and third innings before plating four in the fifth off starting pitcher Blake Phillips (Dalton, Ga.). The flood gates opened in the bottom of the eighth when Penn College scored seven times to build a 13-run lead on 15 hits. Phillips (2-6) allowed 11 runs on 13 hits, walked four and struck out six. Evan Vigna led the Wildcats with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, four RBI, a triple and two runs scored.
In the second game, a pitchers duel broke out between Hayes (0-6) and Aaron Palmer (1-1) as the two had scoreless frames through three innings. The Wildcats scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings while GU didn't get on the scoreboard until the seventh. Sophomore Zack Crawford (Newnan, Ga.) singled home freshman Kyle Gumm (Dallas, Texas) for the lone Bison run. GU had two runners on base, first and second, with Crawford representing the tying run with two outs. The game ended when sophomore Peter LoDuca (Great Necks, N.Y.) flied out to right field.
Gallaudet heads north to face Keuka College (7-18, 2-4 NEAC) tomorrow for a doubleheader at noon.
