Coleman, Crawford lead Bison to victory against Maine-Presque Isle

WASHINGTON - Junior pitcher Ben Coleman (St. Paris, Ohio) threw a complete game shutout Friday afternoon as Gallaudet University defeated University of Maine-Presque Isle, 1-0, in a non-conference baseball game at Hoy Field. The win helped the Bison (2-13) split the doubleheader with the visiting Owls (2-2), who won the first game 3-0 in seven innings.

Coleman (1-1) surrendered three hits, all singles, walked five and struck out five in seven innings of work. Sophomore third baseman Zack Crawford (Newnan, Ga.) came through with a RBI double in the fourth inning to score senior shortstop Mitchell Bensman (Russia, Ohio). Bensman led the Bison with two singles as GU tallied six hits in the win. Maine-Presque Isle was led by third baseman Aaron Kofsta's two hits and one walk. Starting pitcher Saul Nunez (1-1) took the loss on the mound for the Owls.

UMPI scored twice in the top of the sixth in the first game as two Bison errors kept the inning alive for the visitors. Starting pitcher Matt Curry (1-1) went the distance as he allowed three hits, walked one and struck out eight Bison. Curry helped his own cause going 1-for-3 at the plate and scored one run. Matt Cauchon (1-for-1, two walks) scored the game's first run in the fourth and later scored one of two runs in the sixth.

Sophomore first baseman Justin Strong (Charlotte, N.C.) had two of Gallaudet's three hits. Freshman Dylan Hayes (Endicott, N.Y.) threw a complete game and took his third loss of the season. Hayes allowed three unearned runs on four hits, walked three and tallied four strikeouts.

Gallaudet will next travel to Salisbury, Md., to face the No. 1 ranked Sea Gulls (11-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
