AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Gallaudet University baseball team earned its first win during Spring Break here Sunday as the Bison split a non-conference doubleheader here at Lake Myrtle Park against Becker College. The Bison (4-12) won the first game 6-1 and lost the second game 7-0 to the Hawks (3-4).
Game 1: Gallaudet 6, Becker 1
The Bison jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning when freshman Gilwon Seo (Chungju, South Korea) doubled home junior outfielder Kenneth Gentzke III (Scottsville, N.Y.). GU broke open the game in the fifth inning with a five-run frame that was aided by three Becker errors. The Bison scored all of their runs with two outs.
Freshman Ryan Gilbert (Mount Dora, Fla.) singled to left field to start things off in the fifth while Gentzke followed with a walk. After two quick outs, freshman Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.) had an infield hit that scored Gilbert. Three consecutive errors opened the flood gates as GU scored four more runs to take a 6-0 lead.
Becker ended its scoreless streak in the seventh inning when Christopher Testa singled home Gabriel Bovenzi, who reached on a walk.
Junior Blake Phillips (Dalton, Ga.) earned the complete-game win as he allowed one run on six hits, walked four and struck out four in seven innings pitched. The victory is the first on the year for Phillips.
Becker's starting pitcher Daniel Diaz (0-2) suffered the loss as he surrendered six runs (one earned) on four hits, two walks and one strikeout.
Game 2: Becker 7, Gallaudet 0
In the second game, Becker responded with 11 hits and seven runs and held Gallaudet scoreless in the seven-inning contest.
The Hawks roughed up Gallaudet starting pitcher Ian Evans (Murphy, N.C.) for six runs on six hits, two walks in four innings as the lefty only struck out two. Evans (1-4) was lifted in favor of senior Albert Blake (Derby, Conn.) that closed out the final three innings as he allowed one run on five hits and one strikeout.
Becker scored three runs in the second inning as a Bison miscue extended the frame for the Hawks. The visitors later added three runs in the fourth inning, two scoring on a triple by Josiah Shepherd to center field. Shepherd (1-for-3, three RBI) later scored on an Evans' wild pitch. The Hawks added another run in the top of the seventh off Blake as Tanyon Ventres singled home Testa.
Michael Bovenzi (1-1) took the win on the mound as he went six scoreless innings where he allowed seven hits, three walks and struck out two. Nick Lemay closed out the seventh with a scoreless frame as he allowed one hit, walked two and struck out two. GU collected eight hits, two from Kyle Gumm (Dallas, Texas), and left 12 runners on base in the loss.
