Gallaudet breaks run drought in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Gallaudet University baseball team headed south for Spring Break and started things off with a night game here Saturday against Suffolk University. The Bison lost 11-1 at Chain of Lakes Stadium but in the process scored its first run in 26 innings.

Sophomore Kyle Gumm (Dallas, Texas) reached on a fielder's choice with one out in the eighth inning. Senior Chase Magsig (Hudsonville, Mich.) and freshman Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.) followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases for junior first baseman Justin Strong (Charlotte, N.C.). Strong lifted a pop fly to left field but it was deep enough to plate Gumm from third base to get Gallaudet on the scoreboard.

Senior starting pitcher Ben Coleman (St. Paris, Ohio) took the loss as he allowed five runs on five hits in 5.1 innings as he walked six and struck out two. Fellow senior right-hander Albert Blake (Derby, Conn.) surrendered six runs (three earned) on nine hits, one walk in 2.2 innings as the Rams improved to 2-1 on the season.

  • Gumm scored the team's lone run
  • Strong had GU's only RBI
  • Magsig and Upton had the two other team hits

The Bison will head over to Auburndale, Fla., to play two games against Becker College on Sunday, March 13, starting at 3 p.m.
