WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University's baseball team lost 5-1 in a non-conference matchup with Washington (Md.) College on a frigid Thursday afternoon at Hoy Field. The Bison (2-7) held the edge in hits but not in the run column as they left 10 runners on base.
Juniors Justin Strong (Charlotte, N.C.) and Blake Phillips (Dalton, Ga.) led the Bison with two hits as Strong also had a RBI single in the bottom of the second inning which scored freshman shortstop Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.) from second base. Strong's RBI single gave Gallaudet a 1-0 lead which would be tied in the next half-inning as Washington College (2-1) hit two doubles to score its first run.
The game remained tied at 1-1 until the sixth inning when Washington scored another run to take the lead. The Shoremen would tack on three more runs, two in the seventh and another in the eight.
Junior Ian Evans (Murphy, N.C.) started the game, surrendered four runs on seven hits, walked one and recorded five strikeouts over 6.2 innings before being relieved by senior Ben Coleman (St. Paris, Ohio). Phillips came in to pitch the ninth inning.
Dan Jarrell (1-0) took the win for the Shoremen as he pitched four strong innings in relief. Shortstop Joe Lozupone went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, one run and a RBI.
- Evans has struck five or more batters out in two straight outings
- Strong and Phillips recorded their first multi-hit game of the season
- Washington's trio of pitchers combined to strikeout 10 Bison
Gallaudet will remain at home as they prepare for a doubleheader versus Summit (Pa.) University this Saturday (March 5) at noon.
