GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) released its 2018 baseball all-conference awards on Wednesday and Gallaudet University junior infielder Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.) was named to the all-conference first team while senior outfielder Kyle Gumm (Dallas, Texas) was named to the second team. This is Upton's third consecutive selection to the all-conference team but his first appearance on the first team after back-to-back years on the second team.
Upton is tied for first in NCAA Division III for sacrifice flies (8), 13th in triples (6), 26th in triples per game (0.15) and 45th in batting average (.426). Upton leads the NEAC in games (39), triples (6) and sacrifice flies (8). He is third in plate appearances (164), hits (58); fourth in at bats (136), doubles (12), RBI (41) and fifth in stolen bases (15) and total bases (85). He was named NEAC Baseball Player of the Week on May 7 after he went 16-for-18 in a weekend NEAC four-game swing. Upton was honored on Tuesday by D3baseball.com by being named to the National Team of the Week at second base.
Gumm is ranked 17th in Division III for stolen bases (28) and stolen bases per game (0.76). Gumm and Upton helped GU to be ranked fourth in the country for triples (23) and seventh in triples per game (0.59). Gumm leads the NEAC in stolen bases (28), second in at bats (140), third in games (37), fourth in plate appearances (163) and sixth in walks (22). He was named the NEAC Baseball Player of the Week on March 7.
For the second straight season, Penn St.-Berks' Toby Welk was named the NEAC Baseball Player of the Year while teammate Tyler Comport was picked as the NEAC Pitcher of the Year. Penn St.-Abington's Ryan McCarty was named the NEAC Rookie of the Year. Finally, Penn St.-Berks head coach Justin Konnick was picked by his peers as the NEAC Coach of the Year award.
This selection now gives Gallaudet 25 All-NEAC honors since it joined the conference in 2010-11. Ten of the 25 selections have been on the first team and 15 on the second team. The Bison baseball program also has three Player of the Year, two Pitcher of the Year and two Coach of the Year award winners in their history in the NEAC.
