FORT MYERS, Fla. - Gallaudet University struck first against SUNY Canton here Monday night under the lights at the Player Development Complex - Field 5 but the slugfest ended up in favor of the Roos, 11-7.
Gallaudet (2-10-1) rallied in the top of the seventh with four runs as senior first baseman Justin Strong (Charlotte, N.C.) doubled home two runs. GU cut the SUNY Canton lead to two, 9-7, but the Roos added a run in the bottom of the seventh and eighth to put the game away.
SUNY Canton (1-5) picked up its first of the season as six different players had two or more hits in the game. Starting pitcher Derrek Dupont picked up the win while reliever Austin Lamay got the save.
The Bison had five different batters record two hits or more. Designated hitter Ryan Gilbert (Mount Dora, Fla.) led the way with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate. The Bison had five extra-base hits as Winston Lane (Brooklyn Center, Minn.) had a double and triple and scored two runs.
Senior Dylan Hayes (Endicott, N.Y.) took the loss on the hill as he allowed nine runs on 10 hits, walked five and struck two.
Gallaudet will turn around and face the Coast Guard Academy (2-1) on Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. on Field 1 at Terry Park.
