WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University baseball team honored senior Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.) and his family before the start of Sunday's conference game with Penn College at Hoy Field. Upton, Gallaudet's all-time hits leader, played his final home collegiate game going 3-for-5, scored one run and drove in one run. GU dropped the third and final North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game to the Wildcats, 20-6, as the visitors swept the weekend series.
GU scored one run in the first inning, three runs in the third and two runs in sixth. The Bison fell behind 7-0 in the top of the first and trailed 9-1 heading into the bottom of the third inning. Gallaudet cut the margin to five runs, 9-4, with the three runs in the third and had the chance to add more as the Bison left the bases loaded.
Penn College (11-19, 8-6 NEAC) tacked on another six runs before the Bison (9-27, 2-13 NEAC) scored in the bottom of the sixth. The Wildcats tallied another five runs over the course of the final two innings to end the game up 14.
Three different Bison had hits in the game led by Upton's three singles.
Sophomore Darren Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) took the loss as he started on the mound and allowed nine runs on 11 hits, walked four and struck out two in 2.2 innings pitched.
Wildcat starting pitcher Trevor Dolin threw 2.1 innings before giving way to Cody Nelson (3-2) who pitched 3.2 innings for the win.
Gallaudet will next travel to Penn St.-Berks (19-13, 10-5 NEAC) on Friday, May 3, to begin a three-game conference series against the Nittany Lions.
