BJ Flores named ECFC Rookie of the Week

WHITINGHAM, Vt.- The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) named its players of the week for Sept. 10 and Bison freshman BJ Flores (Raymondville, Texas.) received Rookie of the Week honors. The award is the first given to a Gallaudet University player this season and comes on the heels of a historic 47-27 victory over cross-town rival Catholic University of America.

With Catholic attempting to mount a fourth quarter rally against the Bison, for the second straight year, GU coach Chuck Goldstein leaned heavily on his rookie running back. Flores received nine carries in fourth quarter, as he amassed 76 of his 99 yards and two touchdowns to put away the Cardinals for good. The win was the first ever for Gallaudet over Catholic since the rivalry began in 1906.

Flores scored on touchdown runs of 22 and 7 yards and averaged 7.1 yards per carry on the night. With two games in the books this year, Flores has rushed for 153 yards on 25 carries, which leads all Bison players.

The ECFC named Mount Ida College senior Scott Drosendahl as the Offensive Player of the Week after completing 11-of-13 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns. The East Aurora, N.Y., native also rushed for two scores in the Mustangs 22-12 triumph over Plymouth State University. SUNY Maritime senior linebacker Keith Barnes earned Defensive Player of the Week honors as he accumulated 16 tackles and a sack in the Privateers' 20-14 season-opening victor over Massachusetts Maritime. Anna Maria senior kicker Jamal Mitchell picked up Special Teams Player of the Week honors after a perfect 2-for-2 night that saw him set a school record when he connected on a 48-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Mitchell also nailed all four of his extra point attempts in the AMCATS 34-14 win over Maine Maritime Academy.

The Bison enter their bye-week at 1-1 and look to sustain their momentum when they take on Apprentice School in their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 22. The game kicks off at Hotchkiss Field at 5 p.m.
