Gallaudet football standout Tony Tatum selected to play in D3 Senior Classic

NEW YORK - The D3 Senior Classic Committee announced its 2012 all-star teams and Gallaudet University senior cornerback Tony Tatum (Gardendale, Ala.) has been named as a member of the North squad. The North team will take on the South team on Friday, Dec. 7, at Salem Stadium in Salem, Va., in the 4th annual D3 Senior Classic.

Tatum was a standout for the Bison in all three phases of the game as he scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams and helped the team finish with a 7-3 record, including a 5-2 mark in Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) play, their best finish since joining the conference in 2009. Tatum picked off a conference-high six passes this season and totaled 127 interception return yards, including an 80-yard return in a 21-0 victory over Maritime (N.Y.) on Nov. 10. The senior cornerback also returned punts for the Bison and averaged 15.1 yards per return with two punt return touchdowns, both marks that led the ECFC. Tatum added a receiving touchdown to his stat line when he lined up at wide receiver and outjumped his coverage in the end zone during the Bison's 47-27 win over cross-town rivals Catholic University on Sept. 7.

The distinction is yet another in a long list of awards for Tatum this season. Tatum was named ECFC Defensive Player of the Year, ECFC Special Teams Player of the Year, All-ECFC First Team Offense as a return specialist, All-ECFC First Team Defense as a cornerback, earned four ECFC Player of the Week awards, had two inclusions on the Team of the Week and was given two Beyond Sports College Network's Division III Defensive Player of the Week awards.

The team also includes three players from other ECFC schools. Mount Ida defensive lineman A.J. Knibbs, Maritime linebacker Keith Barnes, and Norwich offensive lineman Sean Southworth were all selected to play in the all-star game. The North squad will be led by Maritime (N.Y.) assistant coach Al Piascik and his staff. To learn more about this game (history, previous results, etc.) and to buy game tickets please log onto
