Maiwald, Fenton repeat selections on ECFC All-Academic Team

WASHINGTON – The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) announced it's seventh annual All-Academic honorees and Gallaudet University earned two of the 76 total selections.

Gallaudet senior Sean Maiwald (San Jose, Calif.) and junior Sean Fenton (Chicago, Ill.) were repeat selections to the ECFC All-Academic team. Maiwald is making his third consecutive appearance while Fenton makes his second.

To be honored, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic standing, have participated a minimum of two years with the team and achieved a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30.

The ECFC includes eight teams, all of whom were represented on the 76-player team. Four teams had selections in double digits, led by Norwich University's 19 selections. Anna Maria College and Husson University had 16 apiece followed by Castleton College with 12.

Maiwald joins the exclusive group of only six players from GU to be named to three straight ECFC All-Academic teams. Last year, Nico Santiago and Gregg McConville (2014) joined alums Adham Talaat (2013), Caleb Hinton (2011) and Denton Mallas (2012) in earning this elite honor.

Maiwald, a four-year letterwinner, started all nine games at offensive tackle for the Bison. He helped to make block defenders from Gallaudet's quarterback as the Bison threw for 991 yards and eight touchdowns. GU's ground game gained 415 yards on 297 carries and scored three times. He also recorded two solo tackles on the year.

As a junior defensive lineman, Fenton was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) 2015 Academic All-District Football Team for Division III. Fenton started all nine games this season and tallied 51 tackles (23 solo, 28 assisted), had seven tackles for a total loss of 31 yards, as well as two sacks and five quarterback hurries that helped the Bison defense.

Gallaudet had four all academic honorees last year in the ECFC's sixth year, eight in 2013, eight in 2012, nine in 2011, five in 2010 and two in 2009. GU's total now stands at 38 in seven years.
