Smith named ECFC Special Teams Player of the Week

WASHINGTON - The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) announced its weekly honors for the week of Nov. 2 and junior defensive back Carneilus Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) was awarded Special Teams Player of the Week.

Smith led the Bison against Becker last week as he returned two kicks for a total of 114 yards, including one for a 91-yard touchdown, the longest return for Gallaudet since an 85-yard score in 2007. This was only the fourth return of Smith's career.

Smith fielded Jacob Holmes' kickoff at the Gallaudet 9 and raced upfield and broke through several tackles in front of the Bison sideline. Smith split through Becker defenders Anthony Kaplan and Joseph Linnehan at the Gallaudet 35 and received key blocks from junior Sean Fenton (Chicago, Ill.) and freshman Rashard Witherspoon (Brownsville, Tenn.) as he raced 91 yards for the touchdown at the 1:51 mark in the third quarter. GU lost to the Hawks, 58-6.

Norwich University sophomore running back Quincy Williams was named ECFC Offensive Player of the Week, Becker College senior defensive back Nicholas Sherman was selected as ECFC Defensive Player of the Week, and Castleton freshman running back Moe Harris was picked as ECFC Rookie of the Week.

This is Gallaudet's third ECFC Player of the Week award this season and the first for Smith.

GU (0-7, 0-5 ECFC) will play Anna Maria College (0-8, 0-5 ECFC) in the last home game of the season, Saturday, Nov. 7, at noon on Senior Day.
