Gallaudet's Benton named ECFC Rookie of the Week for the second time

MARSHFIELD, Mass. – The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) announced its weekly honors for the week of Oct. 17 and freshman quarterback Timel Benton (Columbia, S.C.) has been awarded Rookie of the Week for his play last Saturday against Mount Ida College. Benton shares the award with freshman running back Patrick Brown from Norwich University. This is the second time Benton has earned ECFC Rookie of the Week honors after taking home the award in Week 1.

Benton threw for over 100 yards for the second time in his career as he completed 12 of 22 passes for 111 yards and one touchdown. Benton's 35-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Dylan Mento (Hammonton, N.J.) with 23 seconds gave the Bison a chance to tie or win the game on the point after attempt. The Bison came up short and lost 13-12 to Mount Ida. Benton led the Bison offense on the ground as he ran the ball 14 times for 40 yards and one touchdown. He scored from seven yards out in the third quarter as GU cut the Mustang lead to 10-6.

Maritime (N.Y.) won two of the four awards this week with defensive back Brian Price winning ECFC Defensive Player of the Week while Matthew Murphy won ECFC Special Teams Player of the Week. Husson running back John Smith was awarded ECFC Offensive Player of the Week.

This is Gallaudet's sixth ECFC Player of the Week award this season, and the second for Benton.

Gallaudet (1-5, 0-3 ECFC) travels to Vermont to take on Norwich University (2-4, 2-1 ECAC) on Saturday, Oct. 22, at noon.
