WASHINGTON - All fall semester fans of Gallaudet University athletics had been asked on social media to go and vote for the Bison football helmet in the first Helmet Bowl National Championship. Thanks to Gallaudet's strong national and international following the Bison helmet has now advanced to the quarterfinal round of the bracket. The Bison are one win away from reaching the semifinals of the national tournament to find the best helmet in the country.
Gallaudet's helmet won its conference (Eastern Collegiate Football Conference) and was seeded fourth in the East Region. In the first round, Gallaudet dispatched No. 13 seed Cheyney Wolves (65 percent to 35 percent). In the second round, Gallaudet took down No. 6 seed The Ohio State University Buckeyes in a huge way 63 percent to 37 percent. The Bison helmet went up against its toughest opponent, thus far, in No. 8 seed Colgate University Raiders. The week-long voting period, which closes every Tuesday at 1 p.m. (EST), saw Gallaudet down early (61 percent to 30 percent) before GU came back to take a brief lead before the Raiders regained the lead. In the final two hours, Gallaudet added over 200 votes to win (51 percent to 49 percent). The Bison had garnered 2,040 votes to 1,926 for the Raiders.
This week (Dec. 19-Dec. 26) the Bison will face the United States Military Academy West Point (a.k.a. Army) the No. 3 seed in the East Region.
Gallaudet is the last NCAA Division III program among the final eight teams in the Helmet Bowl National Championship. To help the Bison advance they have partnered with the last remaining NAIA program in the College of Idaho Coyotes, the No. 8 seed in the West Region. The Coyotes are going up against the San Diego State Aztecs the No. 3 seed in the West Region.
The two fanbases are encouraged to vote for each other each week. The only way Gallaudet and College of Idaho would face each other would be in the final.
