Gallaudet football running back RJ Randle rushes the ball down the field.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Gallaudet University jumped out to an early lead on the Apprentice School here Saturday afternoon but the final 39 minutes were controlled by the Shipbuilders as the host won 49-13 before a crowd of 280.

Gallaudet's defense stepped up on the first possession and forced a three-and-out. The Bison (0-2) received great field position after a 27-yard punt return by freshman Austin Sliva-Wynne (Rosenberg, Texas) as GU began on the Apprentice 30.

The Bison rushing attack went to work behind sophomore slot Cassmeir Hutchinson (Chesapeake, Va.), who was making a return trip to the Tidewater region. Hutchinson broke off runs of 14 and 12 yards to pick up Gallaudet first downs. Junior superback RJ Randle (McCalla, Ala.) ended the drive with a three-yard touchdown run at the 12:06 mark. Sophomore Mitchell Dolinar (Las Vegas, Nev.) missed the extra-point attempt as Gallaudet led 6-0.

The score remained the same until the start of the second quarter.

On Gallaudet's second possession of the quarter, Randle rumbled 66 yards for his second touchdown of the game. Sophomore Jack Gray (Atherton, Calif.) came on and converted the extra-point kick as the Bison regained the lead, 13-7.

GU got backed up to its own 2 yard line on the next possession. The Apprentice defense came after the Bison and tackled Damonte Bray (Clinton, Md.) in the end zone for a team safety.

The Shipbuilders added two more scores to take a 22-13 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Apprentice's defense held Gallaudet to negative 19 yards on the first four possessions as the Bison were forced to punt.

Gallaudet punter Nicholas Maccini (San Diego, Calif.) stayed busy as he punted five times in the second half as the Bison offense was held to just 16 yards on seven possessions. GU turned the ball over three times on fumbles in the game.
