Nittany Lions too much for Bison in NEAC and home opener

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet men's basketball team dropped its North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener against visiting Penn St.-Berks, 58-40, at the Field House on Monday afternoon.

The Bison (0-4, 0-1 NEAC) got a quick lead in their home opener thanks to senior Orion Palmer (Riverside, Calif.). Palmer opened the game with a layup off of an Anton Jackson (Detroit, Mich.) steal. Jackson finished the game with seven points, four rebounds and three steals. After a Nittany Lions three-pointer, Palmer answered back with a three of his own as GU led 5-3. Penn St.-Berks was able to separate from Gallaudet as it went on a 13-0 run to take a 19-7 lead midway through the first half. The Nittany Lions maintained their double-digit lead, 30-19, as the teams went into halftime.

Penn St.-Berks (1-3, 1-0 NEAC) came out of halftime still on fire as the visitors scored eight straight points. Freshman Joshua McGriff (Somerset, N.J.) did his best to kill the Nittany Lions momentum as he threw down an emphatic dunk a minute later. McGriff (nine rebounds) was big for the Bison as he scored 15 of the 23 total bench points. Unfortunately, the fast paced offense of Penn St.-Berks was too much for Gallaudet, as the Nittany Lions ran away with it. The story of the game for Gallaudet was turnovers as it recorded 24 throughout the game, 12 in each half. The Nittany Lions were able to capitalize and score 19 points off of the Bison miscues.

Palmer pitched in with 10 points and eight rebounds. Jackson and sophomore Trey Gordon (Talladega, Ala.) both added seven points for the Bison.

Penn St.-Berks was led by Tom Smith, Dameon Nixon and Darren Major who each scored 11 points, leading the Nittany Lions to victory.

The Bison look to bounce back and earn their first win as they travel to Abington, Pa., to take on NEAC opponent Penn St.-Abington (2-2, 0-0 NEAC) on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m.
