Tough GU defense limits top scoring NEAC team

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University men's basketball team faced a tough task Sunday as it squared off with SUNYIT, the top scoring team in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC), in the Field House. The Bison, the second ranked NEAC defensive team was up to the task as it held the visiting Wildcats to 10 points below their average but it wasn't enough as SUNYIT won 75-59.

Gallaudet (6-15, 5-9 NEAC) hung tough with SUNYIT (14-6, 9-4 NEAC) in the first half, after the Bison fell behind early. The Bison were able to erase an 11-point deficit and only trailed 33-29 at halftime.

Gallaudet rallied in the second half and went on an 8-0 run behind the play of junior guard Ben Coleman (St. Paris, Ohio) and sophomore guard James Steingieser (New Market, Md.). The duo scored four points each to pull GU within four, 41-37. Minutes later, GU cut the SUNYIT lead to three, 47-44, after a made basket by sophomore Trey Gordon (Talladega, Ala.). A 10-0 run by the Wildcats down the stretch secured the win.

Freshman forward Joshua McGriff (Somerset, N.J.) paced the Bison offense with 18 points as he made 7-of-11 shots. McGriff is ranked third in the NEAC for field goal percentage (56.1 percent). Gordon was the next leading scorer with 13 points and six rebounds. Coleman finished with 10 in addition to seven assists. The Bison defense caused 11 turnovers, that led to eight points, and made four steals and three blocks.
Ryan James lead the Wildcats on offense with 18 points, five rebounds, two assists and a block as SUNYIT had four players in double figures.
The Bison will continue conference play on the road at Lancaster Bible College on Wednesday, Feb 12, at 6 p.m.
