WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University men's basketball team hosted Yeshiva University on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game to begin the 2014-15 season. The Bison lost a heartbreaker, 74-73, in overtime to the Maccabees.
Junior Trey Gordon (Talladega, Ala.) led the Bison (0-1) with 21 points, nine rebounds and three steals as he made 5 of 6 shots from three-point range. Sophomore Joshua McGriff (Somerset, N.J.) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds to go with five blocks, two assists and one steal. Sophomore guard Raymond Nelson (Riverside, Calif.) was the second leading scorer in his Bison debut with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Gallaudet controlled the boards as it outrebounded the Maccabees, 47-36, and shot 52.8 percent from the field (28 for 53).
Yeshiva (1-0) forced overtime with a Benjy Ritholtz (25 points, eight rebounds) three-pointer with 13 seconds and later added a free throw with two seconds left in regulation.
In overtime, McGriff scored a quick layup and senior guard Ben Coleman (St. Paris, Ohio) sunk a three-point shot to put the Bison up 68-65. The two teams battled back and forth as Gordon added a three-pointer as Gallaudet led 71-69 with 1:21 left on the clock. Shelby Rosenberg (15 points) made a layup with 22 seconds left as the Maccabees took the 74-73 lead. The Bison had a chance to win the game at the end but couldn't get a shot off before the buzzer.
In the first half, Gallaudet used a 14-4 spurt to take a 25-17 lead and went into halftime up three, 30-27. The Bison were in control in the second half as their lead increased to 10-points, several times, as Nelson and Gordon scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Gallaudet will travel to Front Royal, Va., on Thursday, Nov. 20., for a 7 p.m. game against Christendom College.
