AURORA, N.Y. – The Gallaudet University men's basketball team completed a two-game North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) weekend sweep in New York here Sunday with a 89-74 victory over Wells College.
Junior center Joshua McGriff (Somerset, N.J.) was unstoppable as he scored the first 12 points of the second half for Gallaudet (13-6, 10-3 NEAC) as he amassed 24 points in the final 20 minutes of play. McGriff posted a career game with 31 points as he made 13 of 19 shots, blocked three shots and grabbed 13 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season.
Wells (8-12, 6-7 NEAC) trimmed the Gallaudet lead to two, 55-53, at the 12:59 mark before a 14-4 Bison run extended the lead back to double digits with just over eight minutes left in regulation. The Express trimmed the margin to nine, 72-63 on a three-point play at the 5:59 mark but that was as close as they got to catching the Bison. GU pulled away down the stretch to secure its third straight win.
All five Gallaudet starters scored in double digits led by McGriff's 31. Senior guard Trey Gordon (Talladega, Ala.) scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half as he made four 3-pointers to go with six rebounds, six assists and three steals. Senior guard Todd Bonheyo (Frederick, Md.) tallied 14 points, dished out five assists and had four steals while sophomore forward Andy Cruz (Bronx, N.Y.) added 13 points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals. Junior guard Raymond Nelson (Riverside, Calif.) recorded 10 points and five rebounds to round out GU's starting five.
Gallaudet jumped out a 17-5 lead to open the game, within the first five minutes of the game, fueled by three 3-pointers by Gordon before Wells College called a timeout. Undeterred by the timeout, Gordon sank another 3-pointer and McGriff added a layup to push the lead up to 22-7 before the Express' offense finally got going. Wells was able to rally back to tie the game with less than three minutes left in the half at 37. The Express was unable to sustain the momentum as the Bison pushed the lead back up to 43-37 as the teams went into halftime.
The Express' freshman guard Rich Ross scored a team-high 28 points, including five 3-pointers, to go with eight rebounds. Junior forward James Feocco added 20 points and seven rebounds while freshman guard Tyree Fisher contributed a game-high seven assists off the bench.

Gallaudet will return home for a five-game home stretch to close out the regular season, starting with NEAC South Division foe Wilson College (4-15, 3-11 NEAC) on Saturday, Feb. 13, at noon.
