Seniors lead Gallaudet in home finale over Keuka

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University men's basketball team played its final home game of the 2016-17 regular season here Sunday afternoon and came out victorious with an 83-58 win over Keuka College in front of 458 spectators.

After falling for just the second time in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) competition yesterday to Wells College, the Bison closed out the home regular-season schedule in style on Senior Day. Gallaudet (19-5, 17-2 NEAC South) set a new program record for wins in a season with 19.

The Bison started all three seniors and came out strong in the first half as it shot 51.4 percent from the field (19 of 37). By the end of the first half, the Bison had built up a comfortable 26-point lead, 50-24, over the Wolves.

In the second half, Keuka (3-18, 3-13 NEAC North) managed to cut into the Gallaudet lead and as the Wolves tried to claw their way back into the game. However the overwhelming lead that the Bison had built in the first half was too much for the Wolves to overcome.

Seniors Joshua McGriff (Somerset, N.J.), Raymond Nelson (Riverside, Calif.) and Shawn Harrington (Frederick, Md.) led the way for Gallaudet in their finale. McGriff went out with a slam as he scored 12 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Nelson added 10 points, six assists, five steals and three rebounds. Harrington recorded eight points, nine rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals.

Freshman guard Noah Valencia (Riverside, Calif.) was also a force offensively as he netted 20 points and dished out four assists.

The Wolves were led by Trevor Powell who dropped 21 points and hauled down nine rebounds. Cameron Winston was the second Keuka player in double figures as he tallied 10 points.


  • Sophmore Jawaun Jackson (Downey, Calif.) had 12 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists
  • Sophomore guard Derek Keels (San Diego, Calif.) came off the bench to record nine points, four rebounds and two steals
  • Junior forward Andy Cruz (Bronx, N.Y.) had nine rebounds, seven points and two steals
  • GU outscored Keuka inside the paint, 50-22
  • Gallaudet scored 37 points off of 23 Keuka turnovers
  • The Bison recorded a season-high 19 steals

GU honored its three seniors before the start of the game. These players have dedicated much of their time and efforts to the men's basketball program and will be greatly missed.

#33 Shawn Harrington
This is Harrington's second season on the men's basketball team. During his time on the team he played in 47 games recording a total of 279 points, 198 rebounds, 37 assists, 29 steals and 16 blocks.

#23 Raymond Nelson
Nelson was a member of the men's basketball team for the last three seasons playing in a total of 67 games and starting in 54 games. He totaled for 930 points, 285 assists, 269 rebounds, 132 steals, and 25 blocks. Nelson is a two-time conference honoree where he has been named to the third team (2014-15, 2015-16).

#2 Joshua McGriff
McGriff is a four-year letterwinner and has started in 66 of the 93 games that he has played in. He has tallied 1,324 points, 778 rebounds, 239 blocks, 58 steals and 57 assists. McGriff is a two-time NEAC honoree. In 2015-16, he was named to the All-NEAC First Team. During his freshman season McGriff was named the 2013-14 NEAC Rookie of the Year.

The Bison will finish up the regular season on the road this Saturday, Feb. 18, at Wilson College (7-17, 6-13 NEAC South) in a NEAC South Division game at 3 p.m.

The NEAC tournament will begin on Feb. 21 with quarterfinal games before the semfinals and championship are held on Feb. 25-26. The site of the playoff games have yet to be determined at this time.
