Bison turn in best effort in first win of 2019

Gallaudet's men's basketball team bench is hype after a big play made by the Bison. Go team!

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University men's basketball team turned in its best performance of the 2018-19 season here Friday night in the Field House as the Bison defeated SUNY Cobleskill, 86-68, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game.

Gallaudet (2-11, 2-3 NEAC) made eight of its 12 3-pointers in the first half as freshman guard Corey Smith (Miami, Fla.) scored half of them in the opening 20 minutes of play. Smith scored 14 of his 24 points in the first half as the Bison took a 43-31 lead into halftime.

The Bison had five players finish in double figures led by Smith. Junior center Steve Valencia-Biskupiak (Riverside, Calif.) recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds to go with four steals, two assists and one block. Junior guard Noah Valencia (Riverside, Calif.) and senior forward Jamal Garner (Jacksonville, Ill.) added 15 and 10 points, respectively. Junior guard Trace Martin (Shingle Springs, Calif.) came off the bench to score 10 points. Sophomore guard Preston Kelly (Fishers, Ind.) passed out a game-high 11 assists to go with eight points, six rebounds and three steals.

SUNY Cobleskill (7-6, 2-2 NEAC) was led by Dashown Nelson's 20-point game and eight rebounds.

Gallaudet shot a season best 80 percent from the free throw line as the Bison made 20 of 25. The Bison tied a season-high mark with 12 3-pointers. The 86 points are the second most this season; the same goes for steals (13), assists (20) and lowest amount of personal fouls (13).

The win snapped a five-game losing streak and gave the Bison their first win in 2019. GU was off to a 1-11 start, the worst since the 2007-08 season, but that came to an end tonight with GU's second win of the season.
