Bison drop season opener at Hood

FREDERICK, Md. - The 2018-19 men's basketball season got underway for Gallaudet University here Friday evening in the opening round of the MMI Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Hood College. The Bison lost 106-63 to the host Blazers in the tournament sponsored by Mid-Maryland Musculoskeletal Institute Division of the Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics.

Hood (1-0) scored the game's first 12 points and led 18-3 behind four three-pointers in the opening five minutes of play. 

Gallaudet (0-1) didn't reach double figures until the 9:15 mark after a layup by freshman Ke'Trez Holman (Centreville, Ala.) made the score 37-11 in favor of the Blazers.

The Bison were able to close the gap some before halftime where Hood led 48-27.

In the second half, Hood outscored Gallaudet by 22 points, 58-36.

Junior guard Noah Valencia (Riverside, Calif.) led the Bison with 13 points and four rebounds as he made 50 percent of his shots. Junior guard Trace Martin (Shingle Springs, Calif.) matched Valencia with 13 points, three assists and three steals. Junior center Steve Valencia-Biskupiak (Riverside, Calif.) made his return to the court for the Bison for the first time since he suited up during the 2006-07 season. Over a decade later, he scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds. 

Hood was led by guards Evan and Mason Wang, who scored 22 and 21 points, respectively. 


  • Freshman guard Corey Smith (Miami, Fla.) scored five points, five rebounds, three assists
  • Sophomore Shawn Daniels (Lakeland, Fla.) added eight points off the bench
  • Senior center Jamal Garner (Jacksonville, Ill.) tallied four points and five rebounds
  • This the earliest Gallaudet has started a season thanks to a NCAA rule passed last January began the 2018-19 season early

Gallaudet will face Immaculata University (0-2) tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 10) at noon in the consolation game of the MMI Tip-Off Tournament. Immaculata lost to Randolph-Macon College, 83-65, on Friday night. Randolph-Macon and Hood will meet in the championship game at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
