GU loses back-and-forth showdown with Wildcats

WASHINGTON - In a back-and-forth tussle the Gallaudet University men's basketball team came up short against SUNY Poly, 78-70, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest here Saturday on Padden Court in the Field House.

The lead changed 16 times between Gallaudet (2-12, 2-4 NEAC) and SUNY Poly (4-10, 1-4 NEAC) throughout the game. In the second half, the lead changed hands 12 times and the score was tied a half dozen instances. 

The visiting Wildcats pulled away at the end from the free throw line. Neither team scored a field goal in the final minute and a half of play. 

Gallaudet was paced by junior guard Noah Valencia (Riverside, Calif.) as he recorded 18 points. He made 6 of 9 shots from the field, including three 3-pointers. Sophomore guard Preston Kelly (Fishers, Ind.) followed suit with 16 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. Two other Bison reached double figures including junior center Steve Valencia-Biskupiak (Riverside, Calif.) and freshman guard Corey Smith (Miami, Fla.) as they scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. 

SUNY Poly forward Josh Gregory dominated the defensive glass as he grabbed 14 of his game-high 16 rebounds to go with a team best five blocks, four assists and 20 points. Guard Redell Freeman matched Gregory with 20 points. 

The Wildcats led 35-31 at the half.

Gallaudet is in the midst of a four-game homestand and will next host Penn St.-Abington (7-6, 4-0 NEAC) on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m.
