WASHINGTON - It was a physical and emotional North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) men's soccer game here Saturday afternoon at Hotchkiss Field as Gallaudet University played host to Morrisville State College. The evenly matched game was scoreless in the first half before GU found the scoreboard early in the second half. The one-goal lead evaporated in the final 20 minutes as the Mustangs scored twice to spoil Gallaudet's senior day, 2-1.
Gallaudet (2-14-1, 2-9 NEAC) got on the scoreboard early in the second half. Sophomore AJ Markel (University Park, Md.) threw in the ball from the far sideline to sophomore Chad Johnson (Gardena, Calif.), who headed the ball backwards towards the Mustangs' goal. Senior Elan Markel (University Park, Md.) was there to boot the ball into the lower left corner of the net for the goal. That goal set-off a joyous celebration for Elan Markel, who was playing his final game in the buff and blue, who ran to the grandstand to celebrate with his family.
The Bison led from the 47:20 mark until the 80th minute when a costly foul in the Gallaudet goalie box gave Morrisville St. (3-12-3, 2-7-2 NEAC) a penalty kick opportunity. Jack Gardiner converted the penalty kick with a goal past sophomore goalie Shane Angel (Mechanicsville, Md.) to knot the game at 1-1.
Morrisville St. scored the game-winning goal, minutes later, when Ralph Andre knocked home a deflection caused by a Charles Baffour shot off Angel at the 81:18 mark. Andre's third goal of the season proved to be the difference. Gallaudet got off three shots in the closing minutes but to no avail against MSC goalie Tyler Card (six saves).
- The Mustangs held a 15-12 edge in shots and 8-4 margin in corner kicks
- Morrisville was whistled for 22 of the game's 35 fouls
- The two teams combined for five yellow cards
- GU is 0-7 all-time against the Mustangs
- This is GU's second straight one-goal loss to MSC
- Last season, the Mustangs won 2-1 in overtime over Gallaudet
At halftime, Gallaudet paid tribute to its three senior defenders; Kevin Fitzpatrick (Hopatcong, N.J.), Elan Markel and Luis Montalvo (Trenton, N.J.). Fitzpatrick played three seasons (2017-19) for the Bison where he played in 51 games, scored three goals, two assists, eight points, two game-winning goals and 36 shots (10 shots on goal). Markel played four seasons (2016-19) and in 65 games he scored four goals, five assists, 13 points, one game-winning goal and 26 shots (12 shots on goal). Montalvo played three seasons (2016, 2018-19) for the Bison and saw action in seven games.
This concludes the 2019 season for the GU men's soccer team.
